Evergreen: Book One

Xavier swelled the aisle with his presence. It gave the illusion that there was room for no one else. From some distant corner of my mind I knew I wanted to try to slip into that space. I wanted to envelope myself in his darkness, feel myself pressed against the walls from the sheer force of it.”

Evergreen is a completed, unpublished young adult, paranormal romance novel by Melissa Armstrong. It is the first in a series of three books.
Xavier Dean collects dead animals. He intimidates everyone in town, but Rain Harper is the only one gutsy enough to approach him. She’s intrigued with his unnatural, green eyes and palpable, dark presence. Drawn in by the warmth that alerts her whenever Xavier’s near, she befriends him despite the fearful rumours surrounding his name. When she begins to sense his heart’s reaction toward her, Rain finds herself falling in love with him.

While neither of them know what Xavier is or where his numerous abilities come from, they suspect he’s the source of their growing, unearthly addiction for each other. After all, it’s not normal to feel your heart literally reaching for another. Their world is shattered when they find out the reason for this craving: Xavier’s presence is draining the life from her.

Now Rain and Xavier must fight the urge to be together…even though their hearts won’t quit.

…I am so hooked I’ve spent an ENTIRE day reading… This is fabulous stuff…written with enough mastery to merit publication as well as an impressive following of love-sick teenage girls. Heck, I’m forty and love it!

Oh wow, this is amazing. It’s heartwarming, heartbreaking, hilarious, mysterious…It’s everything I could want in a book. I love your characters–especially Xavier, of course…

Evergreen offers a supernatural conflict that is different from the norm…The protagonist is strong and likeable, her love a dark and brooding presence.

An excerpt from Evergreen: Book One…

Xavier moved slowly, skimming his hands about my waist to draw me to him. I braced myself for the coming rush, the torrid waves. With his solid body against mine our lips gently entwined, and it was easy to lose myself.

That magnetic energy we created overwhelmed me. As I ran my palms up Xavier’s strong arms to dig my nails into his shoulders, he could only respond by tightening his grip at my waist, bunching my singlet in his fists. I felt weak as my breaths heaved, trying to find more air than they could take. Xavier forced himself to break from the kiss then, keeping his face close and his hands on me.

I watched his chest, rising and falling, while Xavier brought his hands up to cradle my neck. He touched his temple to mine. “Am I really allowed to have this?” he whispered.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I feel like I don’t deserve it,” he said. He moved to look down at me, eyes searching my face for an answer. “Why now? Why, when my whole life I’ve been walking in shadows? And then you come along and you’re all light and sunshine.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“It scares me,” he breathed. When I looked at him in question he said, “It’s foreign to me, feeling this way. I’m not worthy of it but at the same time I’m afraid of losing it.”

My chest blazed, spreading through me. “I know I’m allowed to have it,” I told him, gliding my hand over his heart. “What if the sun wanted nothing more than to be with the darkness? Don’t light and shade already go hand in hand? You never find one without the other.” Closing his eyes, Xavier put his forehead to mine. His fingers lifted and wound their way into my hair, thumbs brushing my cheekbones. “Let me deserve you,” I whispered, almost begging.

With his brow creased he lifted his eyes to me once again. I could hear the quake in his intake of breath to say, “If you want me, I’m yours.”

I closed in on that small space between us and kissed him softly before I mouthed the words, “I want you,” against his lips.
