2017 #PitchWars Mentee Hopeful Bio

Hey there! My name is Mel Armstrong. Allow me to introduce you to my historical fantasy, The Waking of Shadows:

ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD meets THE INFERNAL DEVICES set in the Australian hills.

When ghost hunter royalty, Adelaide Collins, wakes in 1882 with no memory, she draws the attention of a powerful Priestess out for her blood. Now a helpless target, Adelaide undertakes hunter training with Chase, the boy who’s made it clear her presence is unwelcome. Despite that, Adelaide begins to fall for him, but Chase is keeping secrets and it’s not just how he really feels about her – he’s determined to protect her with his life, even if he might be the reason hers is in danger.

The Waking of Shadows would appeal to fans of Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries – helloooo, hot brothers! – and my story style is big on plot, with a delicious dose of romance, akin to Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare and Jessica Shirvington.

What you’ll find in my MS:

An Australian setting – the nature, the wildlife, and a bit of that Aussie slang.

A subtly kickass heroine – It’s all about her quiet strength and determination. Plus, she has serious sword skills.

Hot, Aussie brothers – Yes, we gave you the Hemsworth brothers, but who would object to another set? Seriously… And on that note:

A strong sibling relationship – They joke, they laugh, they argue, they’re very close, but expect to get some heart-wrenching feels.

A complex villain you’ll love – She’s flirtatious and provocative, powerful, calculating, vindictive. And yet…you’ll end up rooting for her.

Romance – An enemies-to-lovers vibe. Some slow burn (but not snail-paced). Tension. A bit of a love triangle.

Unexpected twists – Nope, my lips are sealed.

Ghost hunting and general badassery – of course!

Parties, dancing and gowns. Talismans and trinkets. Action. Fiery nightmares. Swords and daggers. Hidden passages. Spells and powers. A portal to the present. Horse riding and carriages. A gothic Victorian boarding house. Secret deals and broken laws. Betrayal. Revenge. Alliances. Heartache and humour.

I could go on…

I’m part Finnish, part Croatian, and primarily Australian. Thanks to a mixed bag of cultures, I’m also part hilarious. I live in Perth with my husband, daughter and one adorable, cuss-inducing Rottweiler. When I’m not spending my days reading and writing YA books, you’ll find me starting grand, creative projects on a whim, and mentally renovating houses that aren’t mine.

I’ve given my manuscript my all, and so now I’d love a mentor to help push me even further, to make it the best it can possibly be. When it comes to my writing I work hard and I’m always open to constructive criticism and suggestions.
